On April 21, Bronxville High School partnered with the New York Blood Center to host a highly successful blood drive, bringing together students, staff, and the community in support of a life-saving cause.
Organized by Ms. Briggs, the event was inspired by both personal experience and a desire to give back. As a regular donor, she emphasized the importance of helping others and making a positive impact.
Despite some early challenges, the event ultimately saw strong participation. “I love that so many kids sign up to donate, and I think it is very brave and I am so impressed and proud of all the students. I appreciate how the students who volunteered were going above and beyond.”
The results of the blood drive far exceeded expectations. The original goal was 55 appointments and 40 donations, but the event surpassed both, reaching 68 total donations, including 3 double red donations. In total, 69 people participated, with 29 students signing up to donate. These donations have the potential to save up to 207 lives (3 lives per 1 donation).
Ms. Briggs expressed her appreciation for the community’s efforts and the meaning behind the event. “I think the idea of students doing something outside of themselves is really amazing because it is a way of doing something that there is no return on, you are giving without expectations and it is just for the good of others,” she also added, “knowing you can make that big of a difference is just as important.” Looking ahead, she hopes to continue the tradition in the future. Ms. Briggs said that she wants to keep the drive an annual spring event.
Lastly, Ms Briggs also shared her gratitude for everyone involved. “I can’t express the tremendous amount of gratitude I feel toward the students, staff and the community for making this such a successful and fun event.”
Donating blood at the drive was an incredibly meaningful experience for me because the cause is personally important to me. When I was born, my family experienced firsthand how important blood donations can be during a medical situation, which inspired me to want to give back in the same way others once helped us. The entire experience was very positive, and the staff and student volunteers were extremely supportive and encouraging throughout the process. Being able to contribute to something that has the potential to help save lives made the experience even more rewarding, and I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to participate. I would also encourage other students to consider donating next year because the process was very efficient and truly worthwhile.
Overall, the blood drive highlighted the strength of the Bronxville High School community, an opportunity to fulfill the Bronxville Promise and showed how students can make a real difference through small but meaningful actions.
