The Bronxville Girls Cross Country team finished their season in the best way possible this fall… by bringing home the New York State Class C title! The win was especially meaningful after last year’s state meet, where the Broncos scored 64 points and lost the championship by only two points to East Aurora.
This time around, the team was even more determined and knew how hard they needed to work in order to get the results they wanted. On November 15, 2025, they ran their hearts out with Bronxville winning with 78 points, holding off Saranac (87) and last year’s champions, East Aurora (106).
Not only did the team win first place, but freshman Mia Horgan also took home the Individual Class C Championship, placing first out of 132 of the best runners in New York.
For many team members, this championship felt like the culmination of months of challenging workouts and commitment to this sport. Junior Emerson Dennis said the memory of last year’s loss motivated them from day one.
“Winning states has been the goal for our team the whole year, especially since we lost by only two points last year,” Dennis said. “Going into the race we weren’t the favorites, but we had confidence because we knew we were prepared for a tough, gritty race. It took a huge effort from all of our scorers on a cold early morning upstate, but we knew that’s what it would take to win.”
She emphasized the closeness of the group as a major factor in their success:
“One thing that’s different this year about the team is really how close we’ve grown. We’ve bonded so much through weekend long runs, fro yo trips, and definitely made a lot of funny memories. It was definitely this team spirit which helped us be mentally ready to give our best performances at the races which mattered the most.”
Teammate Carina Winiecki, also a junior, agreed with Dennis, reflecting on how much the team put into the season.
“Being able to race like we did this weekend was a huge privilege. We all have been working so hard this season—early morning summer workouts and long days after school—it was definitely worth it to celebrate as state champions,” she shared.
Winiecki noted the pressure leading up to the meet, especially with strong competitors running next to them, but instead of feeling overwhelmed, the Broncos used last year’s narrow loss as motivation.
“With such an outstanding young team, it was amazing to see freshmen and even middle schoolers stepping up to perform under such high stakes. I am so proud of our team and can’t wait for next year.”
