Last Wednesday, the Broncos played the very strong Pleasantville in the Section 1 Class D final. Seeded one under Pleasantville, this was a decisive victory for the Broncos, especially since they were unable to find triumph in the last two years against the Panthers. Bronxville had to face Haldane and Blind Brook, defeating both, in order to earn their spot in the finals. This is Bronxville’s first time winning their section since 2014.
Under Coach Patrick Henderson, this team demonstrated tenacity, grit, collaboration, and heart the entire season, giving their full effort every time they stepped on the field. Lacrosse has always been an integral part of the Bronxville community, where student-athletes have started young, playing for the Bronxville Youth Lacrosse Association, Predators, 2Way, and more. Many playing with some of the same teammates their whole life, this achievement represents a great feat, especially for many of the seniors. This was a truly memorable moment for these players.
The game started somewhat one sided, with Pleasantville holding a lead of three throughout portions of the first half. However, Bronxville continued to prevail, cutting down the deficit to one coming into the final minutes of the last quarter. Then, Brian Formato scored a very decisive goal to tie up the game, sending it into overtime. Brian then brings the ball into Panther territory, making a quick move, then passing it to Nicholas Martinelli, who scores the goal to win.
Surely a nailbiter, Bronxville won in an electric way.
We will be rooting for them next year, and hopefully, the reigning champs will be able to do it again!
